A Sejda alternative with no hourly limit

If you have been editing PDFs on Sejda and keep running into the free limit, Burgundy PDF works the same way without it. You click the text that is already on the page and retype it, then download the result. There is no hourly count, no page cap and no account. It also differs in one way Sejda's web version cannot match: your file never leaves your computer.

What stays the same

If you know Sejda, you already know how to use this. That is deliberate. Burgundy PDF was built by people who used Sejda for years and liked how little it asked of them.

  • One tool per page, with the same addresses: /merge-pdf, /compress-pdf, /pdf-editor, /sign-pdf. Change the domain in a bookmark and it still points at the right tool.
  • Add files, set options, download. Every result offers the next tool, so a merged file can go straight into Compress.
  • The editor edits the document itself. Click a line of existing text and type. Your words are written into the page in the font the line was set in, and the old words are removed from the page, not covered with a white box. You can also delete a line, move it, or add text, images, shapes, a signature and whiteout.

What is different: where the file goes

Sejda's online tools do their work on Sejda's computers, not yours. Its pricing page says so plainly: its web tools are the ones "where you upload your documents and process them on our servers", and each tool page says the file is deleted two hours later. Its privacy policy names DigitalOcean and Google Cloud as hosts, in the United States and Europe. For most documents that is a reasonable arrangement, and Sejda is open about it.

Burgundy PDF does the same work inside your browser tab. The page downloads the tools once, as ordinary website code. When you choose a file, the browser reads it from your disk into memory, and nothing sends it anywhere after that. There is no copy on a server to delete, because none was made.

That matters most for the documents people hesitate over: a passport scan, a signed lease, a bank statement, a medical letter. It also removes the waiting. There is no queue and no transfer time, so a large file costs you nothing extra to send.

What is different: the limits

Sejda's free tier is generous for occasional use, and it has limits. Quoted from its own pages:

  • "Free service for documents up to 200 pages or 50 MB and 3 tasks per hour." (the editor; some other tools allow fewer pages)
  • "Free users are limited to a single file per task."
  • "Free users are limited to 10 pages per OCR task."
  • "Free users are limited to 50 pages per conversion."

Burgundy PDF has none of these. No count of tasks, pages or files is built in. The one real limit is your device: the whole file is held in memory while a tool works on it, often more than once. A 1,000-page document is fine on a laptop and may be too much for an old phone. The Help page lists every limit that does exist, each checked against the code.

When Sejda is the better choice

We would rather you pick the right tool than pick ours. Choose Sejda when:

  • You need to work offline. Sejda Desktop runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and, in Sejda's words, "the files never leave your computer". Burgundy PDF runs in the browser and needs the page to load; it has no offline mode and no app to install.
  • You need a tool we do not have. Sejda has more tools than our 26. If yours is not in the table above, Sejda probably has it.
  • Your device is short of memory. A server does the heavy lifting for you. On an old phone or a low-memory Chromebook, a very large file may be more than a browser tab can hold, and Sejda's servers will manage it.

For signatures, the two are alike: both give you everyday signatures (drawn, typed or an image), not certificate-based digital signatures. Sejda's editor page says Sejda "does not guarantee that the signature provided through this tool is legally binding". The same is true of any signature of that kind.

Check it yourself

You do not have to take "nothing is sent" on trust. In about a minute:

  1. Open any tool, for example Compress, and open your browser's developer tools (F12, or right-click → Inspect). Go to the Network tab.
  2. Clear the list, then choose a PDF and run the tool.
  3. Look at the requests. None carries your file. You will see no request whose size matches your document.

Try the same test on any site that uploads, and you will see the file go out. The Security page goes into more detail.

Questions

Is Burgundy PDF really free, with no limit at all?

Yes. There is no paid plan, no trial, no sign-in and no watermark. No limit on tasks, pages or file size is built in. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, which the Help page explains.

Can it edit existing text like Sejda does?

Yes. Click the line and retype it. The new words are written into the page in the document's own font where it can, and the old words are removed rather than hidden. There are two limits, and Sejda has the same ones. A scanned page has no text to click, so run OCR first. And if a font was embedded without a character you type, the editor uses the closest match and tells you.

Is there a Sejda alternative that works offline?

Sejda's own desktop app does. Burgundy PDF does not work offline, though it never sends your file anywhere while it is online.

Why is it free?

It costs very little to run. Your computer does the work, so there are no servers processing files and nothing to pay for per task. It is built by KissMyMac, a small repair business in Malaysia.

Is my file stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser, and only if you want it there. The editor keeps a recovery copy of documents under 5 MB so a closed tab is not lost work, and Recent files remembers the last 50 files you used. Both stay on your device, and clearing the site's data removes them.
